About the Institute
In 2002, the Aga Khan University established its Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in London (AKU-ISMC). The goal of the Institute is to strengthen research and teaching on the heritage of Muslim societies as they have evolved over time, and on the challenges these societies face in today’s globalised world. At AKU-ISMC, the social sciences and humanities are utilised as intellectual tools to study the construction of knowledge, processes of change, structures of governance, and artistic and creative expressions within Muslim societies and cultures. The Institute seeks to create opportunities for interaction among academics, traditionally trained scholars and other professionals in an effort to deepen the understanding of issues affecting Muslim societies today.
The Institute’s MA in Muslim Cultures aims to contribute to the formation of scholars, intellectuals and professionals capable of engaging with contemporary challenges, particularly those faced within contemporary Muslim societies, by drawing upon ethical ideals, critical thinking and modern academic tools. The MA Programme offers a distinctive way of understanding the cultures of Muslims as they have evolved over time.

Al Mu’allim Mohamed Awad Binladin Chair in Architecture in the Islamic World
The Department of Architecture and Design in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the American University of Beirut invites applications to Al Mu’alim Mohamed Awad Binladin Chair in “Architecture in the Islamic World” at the rank of Professor commencing September 2012.
The Department of Architecture and Design has a record of excellence in teaching and research since it was established in 1966. It has two undergraduate programs, one in Architecture and one in Graphic Design, and two graduate programs in Urban Planning and Policy and in Urban Design. At the Department, the design discipline is understood as a cultural practice that engages social, economic and political issues and as a critical tool of inquiry that integrates process with product and methodology with representation in a multidisciplinary manner. Inquiry through design comes with an acute awareness of our existence in the region with its multitude of languages and cultures and our location within Beirut with its exceptional physical fabric and cultural formats. The Department is currently working to strengthen the integration between the various degree programs and to establish a graduate program in History, Theory and Criticism (HTC) within a Center for Advanced Study of the Built Environment (CASBE).
“We expect the Binladin to take the lead in building a multidisciplinary center on the built environment in the Arab and Muslim world at AUB to:
- Generate historical and theoretical critical discourse on the built environment.
- Encourage interaction between the worlds of practice and scholarship.
- Sponsor advanced research that focuses on regional issues of concern in the Arab and Muslim World.
The Binladin Chair would be expected to make a significant contribution to our academic programs and participate and help organize related activities such as workshops, seminars, and conferences. We would anticipate holding an annual event – a seminar or symposium – involving the chair, to review activities undertaken under the auspices of the chair and/or to explore topics relevant to architecture in Islamic societies.”
Candidates must have a PhD in architectural history with a specialty and an established record of research and publications in Islamic architecture. The preference is for Islamic architecture in the Arab World and knowledge of or involvement in the contemporary architectural practice in the region.
Candidates are invited to submit 1) a letter of application including a brief statement on teaching philosophy and research/creative activity agenda, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) samples of design work and publications, and 4) the names and full contact information of at least three referees, by April 30, 2012, to: Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, American University of Beirut, PO Box 11-0236 Riad El-Solh, Beirut, Lebanon 1107-2020. University of Massachusetts Amherst

Endowed Chair in the Study of Nonviolent Direct Action and Civil Resistance
The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications and nominations for a visionary scholar of distinction to serve as the inaugural holder of the Endowed Chair in the Study of Nonviolent Direct Action and Civil Resistance, a new faculty position focused on the scientific study of nonviolent direct action and civil resistance.
Nonviolent direct action refers to strategies and activities designed to achieve social and political change without the use of violence. Examples of nonviolent direct action include collective organizing, social movements, protests, sit-ins, vigils, consciousness raising, and other forms of civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance. Proponents of nonviolent direct action recognize the need for active struggle to foster social and political change and use nonviolent approaches as alternatives to passive acceptance of oppression and inequality, or the use of violent confrontation, to achieve social and political goals. The activities of Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. (and others like them) provide good examples of the kinds of nonviolent direct action on which the chairholder should focus his/her scientific work.
The chairholder will provide national/international leadership to the study of this critical topic. The chairholder may be from any discipline, but her/his research methodology must be scientific and focused on large-scale social phenomena.
